MMP News Breaks This Week (03/07/10) Print E-mail

G-town Radio is proud to present news breaks from the Media Mobilizing Project.  You will hear new pieces each week on Tuesdays and Thursdays (noon & 5 PM).

This week's On Blast segment is called A Student Responds to West Philly High Being a Possible Renaissance School.  The Philadelphia School District recently announced that West Philadelphia High School is eligible to become a Renaissance school. This means that, if West is selected as a Renaissance school, West could be subject to 'turnaround' reforms and possibly outside managers.  Since West already has a plan for whole school transformation, one that students and community members have spent years working towards (and that has already had big positive effects on the school climate), many people are concerned about what the Renaissance process could mean for the school. In this piece, Shaina Richards (center in photo) interviewed West student Justin Carter (left in photo) about his reaction to the situation. Shaina Richards produced this piece.

Labor Justice Radio this week features a piece called Talking About Disinvestment & GentrificationConcerned citizens gathered for a town hall meeting in North Philadelphia to talk about the housing issues facing local neighborhoods. Charles Clarke spoke to Patrice Greene of Bread & Roses, who organized the event. He also interviewed forum participants about affordable housing, disinvestment in their neighborhoods, and gentrification. (Photo by Lauren Hansen-Flaschen)
