The Sound From Germantown

Lucky Old Souls

Every Tuesday at 2 p.m., Feldie brings you two hours of the hottest, swingin-est jazz and R&B tracks from back in the day... and I mean back in the day, as in 50, 60, 70+ years ago. That's right... The best jazz, pop standards, blues of all kinds, early rock & roll, songs that were hits, and songs that should have been hits. We're not nostalgic--we just know that music transcends time... and a hit is a hit.

Join Feldie as he digs into the music of Richard Rodgers, one of the great composers of American popular music.  You'll hear his music performed by masters like Sonny Rollins, Ahmad Jamal, and Sarah Vaughan.

Later in the show, you'll hear several tracks from The 5 Royales, an unheralded R&B group from the 1950s featuring the fiery guitar licks of Lowman Pauling, whose influence on later soul and rock guitarists is apparent after just a few notes.

All that and more on today's edition of Lucky Old Souls.

On today's edition of Lucky Old Souls, Feldie will be joined in the studio by saxophonist/flutist/poet Elliott Levin, possibly the hardest-working musician on Philly's jazz scene.  Elliott's been making music for over 30 years and has worked with performers ranging from Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes to Cecil Taylor.  These days he can be heard regularly with Bobby Zankel's Warriors of the Wonderful Sound and the West Philadelphia Orchestra and leading various groups of his own.  Elliott will tell some stories about the old days and play some of the many recordings he appears on, along with some of his favorite recordings by others.  And you'll also be treated to a live in-studio performance from Elliott and percussionist Robert Kenyatta.

Lucky Old Souls, v.35--Giving the Trumpeters Some--TODAY 2-4 P.M. (10/21/08) Print E-mail

ImageTrumpeter Bart Miltenberger will join Feldie in the studio for a special edition of Lucky Old Souls, exploring the music of some of the great forgotten/unheralded trumpet players from throughout the history of jazz.  Bart has an impressive and unusual variety of sounds in his trumpet-playing vocabulary.  This is due in no small part to his deep knowledge of and respect for the history of jazz trumpet playing.  He'll be programming most of the show today, going from Tommy Ladnier to Ron Miles and hitting lots of great stuff in between.  It'll be a blast...

And check out Bart with some of best bands in Philly... Matt Davis's Aerial Photograph, Bobby Zankel's Warriors of the Wonderful Sound, and the Chance Trio
