umüvme features spoken word recording artist, motivational speaker, inspirational poet, writer, and actress Shakina Lewis aka KINA (THE PROPHETIC POET). Kina has shared her words and messages at various churches, schools, detention centers, conferences and young adult’s events, and for her dedicated work with children and adolescents, she has been awarded many certificates of appreciation. She is currently attending Bible College at the Center for Urban Theological Studies (CUTS) and is pursuing her Bachelor Degree in Human Services. Kina has spent four years as a member, servant and minister of Eagle’s Nest Christian Fellowship, and she is also a graduate of Eagle’s Nest Prophetic College. She serves as the Youth Leader and is currently working on directing a play for her church. Kina also works at Horizon House as an employment Specialist & Case Manager, where she teaches life skills to high risk young adults. She performed in One-Touch Ministry's hit play “Prayers of the Righteous Availeth Much.” Her single “First Love” was in rotation on Gospel Highway 11 and WDAS AM, making her the first spoken word artist ever aired on a local gospel radio station. She was also the first spoken word artist to perform on the Unity Day Gospel Stage in 25 years. Kina is the CEO and Founder of P.O.W (Power of Words) spoken word competition through which she is pioneering a major platform for Christian spoken word artists. umüvme's new season begins tonight with featured guest poet, political activist, award-winning author, professor, cultural analyst, essayist, publisher, and institution builder, EWUARE X. OSAYANDE: THIS Thursday, June 25th, Osayande will be the featured poet for the "Renowned Poets & Authors" and the "Poetry in the Park" series sponsored by the Camden County Cultural & Heritage Commission. The event will take place on the grounds of the Historic Hopkins House at Cooper River Park located at 250 South Park Drive, Haddon Township, NJ 08108. The event is free and begins at 7 pm. An open mic will follow!

FEATURED ARTIST LIVE IN STUDIO: Jeffrey Glenn Reese, published author, international pop artist and "prince of the spoken word,” is world renowned for his powerful and provocative poetry as well as his masterful line drawings which have been compared to the work of Picasso, Matisse, and Cocteau. Reese has performed and exhibited at the Smithsonian in Washington, DC, the NY Art Expo at the Javitz Center, the NY State Museum of Art, the Legendary Vitter End in NYC, Café Lena in Saratoga, NY, the Annual Comesunday Event at The Egg - Rockefeller Plaza in Albany, NY, the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia, Hyde Park in England and at the Montreal, Canada Jazz Festival. He has performed with such acts as Wynton Marsalis, Roy Ayers and Miles J. Reese has opened for The Last Poets, SWV, Mighty Sparrow, and Pieces of a Dream. Reese was recognized as one of the top 79 artists in the world for his mural painting at Woodstock in 1994 and served on the committee to select artists to paint at Woodstock 1999. He was selected as one of the first artists to present, lecture and perform at the first Anguillian Art Festival in Anguilla, Netherland Antilles. Reese has written two books containing poetry, art, short stories and essays: Jewelry from The Higher Power, Vol.1 and Poems and Other Writings, published by American Vision Galleries in NYC. This latter book continues to grow in value as a collector’s item and is currently being made into a CD version with music. Reese has just recently completed a new body of art work that will be shown at the Jeffrey Glenn Reese Art Gallery to be opened by summer 2009 on Historic Benson Street in Camden, NJ. QUI VIVE! was created in 2002 as the Young Writers Project. Originally developed as creative writing groups at Kensington and Edison High Schools in North Philadelphia, Qui Vive! has expanded to offer 10 different after school writing programs in Germantown for middle and secondary school students, each ending in public readings and professionally-bound anthologies. Qui Vive! offers after-school workshops in Germantown at Cliveden of the Historic Trust and cross-generational, “write with your kids” programs at Wyck. FEATURE POET (IN STUDIO): TAMESHA S. HAWKINS is the author of Sugar Lumps and Black Eye Blues (2007) and Confectionately Yours (September 2009). The New Jersey native attended Temple University where she majored in Elementary Education with concentrations in Theater Arts and Psychology. Maintaining a home away from home in Philadelphia, she devotes her time to working in the theatre profession, promoting literacy in Philadelphia public schools, and performing. Currently, she writing a one-woman showcase titled Beginning with Molasses, which will bring her poetry to life for the theater stage. After the completion of her play, Hawkins’ plans to leave the U.S. and journey to Japan to enhance her writing and Theater Administration knowledge. Slated to perform for NBC 10 and Aspire Arts for their event in June, Hawkins is excited that her work is taking shape in the community. Influenced by her mentor Dr. Kimmika Williams-Witherspoon, Hawkins learned how to shape words to break the Potemkin village of silence and create her own voice in the culture of poetry. Selections from both her books have been featured on Brown Girl Radio: A Cure for the Common, Da Block, WRTI 90.1 FM with J. FEATURED POETS LIVE IN STUDIO: YELLOW RAGE
Michelle Myers and Catzie Vilayphonh are founding members of the spoken word group YELLOW RAGE, a dynamic duo of Philly-based Asian American female spoken word poets. Yellow Rage gained national attention when they performed on the first season of the critically-acclaimed HBO television series "Russell Simmons Presents Def Poetry," which first aired in December 2001. Through their poetry, Catzie and Michelle hope to provide an awareness that is not often heard. Exploring topics from fetishes to cultural appropriation to ethnic pride, Yellow Rage challenges mainstream misconceptions of Asianness. Yellow Rage is one of the headliners at this weekend's Germantown Poetry Festival on Saturday, April 18th, from 12-5pm in Vernon Park. |
