Intro to Sewing

This class is perfect for folks with ZERO sewing experience, or anyone who hasn’t sewn in a while and wants a refresher. We will cover how to thread the machine, how to wind and load a bobbin, how to sew in a straight line, around curves, and turn corners. We will also go over how to adjust stitch length and width.

If you’ve been curious about learning to sew, and want to test out machine sewing in a low-stakes, supportive environment, this is the class for you.

This course will run with a minimum of 3 students and is capped at 8 students.

LOCATION & ACCESSIBILITY:

The Slow Fashion Academy studio is located in Firehouse Arts Germantown, 5231 Germantown Avenue, B06, Philadelphia, PA 19144 (United States).

There is plenty of free street parking along Germantown Avenue, and the 23 SEPTA bus stops right in front of the building at the corner of Germantown Ave. and Bringhurst St. There is also a bike rack in front of Tipsy Cafe, next door. We are a half-mile walk from the Wister stop on SEPTA regional rail.

Unfortunately, the studio is on the basement level of the building, down a flight of stairs, and not wheelchair accessible.

DO I NEED TO BRING ANYTHING?

No. All of the materials you will need are included in your workshop fee. The studio has enough sewing machines for everyone, and all are tested prior to the class.

CAN I BRING MY OWN SEWING MACHINE?

If you would like to bring your own sewing machine, please arrive 5-10 minutes early to set it up, and ensure you have all of the necessary parts (foot pedal, power cord, bobbin case, needle plate, etc.). You should be confident that your machine is in good working order. There will not be enough time in class for the instructor to troubleshoot your machine individually, so if we get it set up and there appears to be an issue, we will ask that you switch back to one of the studio machines.\
