From Cities to Farms, Using Land to Increase Sustainability

today December 20, 2024

Background
Our land is a valuable resource to preserve and to help us with sustainability. Today we talk about ways of addressing two big problems, urban flooding and fertilizer runoff in agricultural fields.
Dr. Franco Montalto: is Professor of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering at Drexel University. In the wake of increased flooding in cities caused by climate change, understanding nature-based infrastructure options to reduce the risk of flooding and alleviating strain on traditional drainage systems is essential.  Dr. will talk about what the “Sponge City” strategies can offer in increasing city resilience and livability.
Dr. Wei Zheng and Hongxu Zhou: Dr. Zheng is Principal Research Scientist/Adjunct Faculty at Illinois Sustainable Technology Center (ISTC), University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign

Hongxu Zhou is a postdoctoral researcher at ISTC. They will discuss biochar as a material which enhances sustainability. These researchers have created a new kind of designer biochar that is not only made from waste, but it also absorbs waste nutrients and recycles them back into the soil as fertilizer.
