Pamela Darville & Peter Furcht are from POWER Interfaith’s Climate Justice and Jobs team. POWER Interfaith is a nonprofit interfaith, multi-racial people’s movement committed to racial and economic justice on a livable planet. Pamela is a civil rights lawyer who retired from her position as Assistant Chief Counsel from the U.S. Department of Education, the Office of Civil Rights. Peter is a retired chemical engineer who worked making facilities produce less waste. They will talk about POWER’s successful campaign convincing the state’s Public Utilities Commission (PUC) to reduce requested natural gas rate increases by the local gas works and to recognize the environmental impacts of this utility, the first such decision in the state.

Elaine Fulz, Keon Monroe, Don Campbell & Karen Melton are from Citizens’ Climate Lobby (CCL), a grass roots nonprofit empowering everyday people to lobby congresspeople and leaders on behalf of the climate. As a public administrator, Elaine worked with the UN specialized agency, the International Labor Organization and recently has been a member of the CCL Philadelphia Steering Committee. Keon has used his environmental studies background to elucidate climate impacts and solutions, including Philadelphia’s steam loop. Don is a semi-retired telecommunications consultant who is on the CCL Steering Committee. Karen retired from healthcare software development and works with CCL, the Sierra Club and other environmental organizations. They will discuss their successful effort to dissuade the Philadelphia 30th Street train station from dropping steam power to go to natural gas.
Tammy Murphy is Advocacy Director of the Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR) of Pennsylvania. She will discuss the governor’s agreement with the company CNX, a natural gas driller, to reduce the effects of natural gas drilling in the state. This agreement is voluntary on the part of the company, has no enforcement mechanisms, yet is the first of its kind in the state. PSR is very opposed to the agreement while some other environmental groups think it may be a first step towards reining in natural gas drilling in a state where the legislature is failing to take action.
