Exploring ways economic resources can be redeployed to lessen climate change risk

today July 21, 2023

Background

Updating you on environmental economic issues that affect the whole world as well as in the US.  We explore ways that economic resources can be redeployed to lessen climate change risks.  Our particular emphasis is the role of the World Bank and what it is doing environmentally; we spoke to someone outside the World Bank as well as someone inside it.

  • Richard Damania is the chief Economist of the Sustainable Development Practice Group at the World Bank, having had various positions at the World Bank before that.  He has published articles in many scientific journals and is on the Editorial Board of several prestigious scientific journals.  Richard gives us an insider’s view of the World Bank and its recent report advising the redirection of fossil fuel subsidies internationally towards lowering climate change, protecting our health, the economy, and our food.
  • Steve Hanley is a retired attorney who for the past ten years has been a lead author for CleanTechnica.com which covers the transition to clean energy and clean transportation for an international audience.  From an outsider’s point of view, he tells us about the World Bank’s recent report detailing how world-wide subsidies of fossil fuel industries can be redirected to reduce climate change.
  • Deanna Noel is the campaigns director for the nonprofit Public Citizen’s Climate Program which advocates for financial institutions and regulators to act on climate change.  She discusses the role of insurance companies in the US in facilitating fossil fuel activities and responding to economic risks, as well as Public Citizen’s campaigns to change the behavior of these insurance companies (including those insurance companies insuring liquified natural gas or LNG).
