Interview with artist Joe Boruchow

today February 5, 2023

Background

In this episode of Truth In This Art Beyond: Philadelphia, Rob Lee interviews Joe Boruchow, a Philly-based artist known for his black paper cutouts transformed into large-scale murals, street wheatpastes, and gallery installations. They discuss his work, inspiration and the thought process behind each project.
Joe Boruchow is a Philadelphia-based artist who specializes in mural and paper cutout work. He is self-taught and began working with paper cutouts in 2003. He is known for creating large-scale murals, graphic novels, fine art prints, and metal wall hangings, often inspired by architecture and current events. His work often explores themes such as race, sexuality, politics, history, and art. He is a finalist for Pew Fellowship and has worked with the Philadelphia Mural Arts Program, and his graphic novel “Stuffed Animals” was awarded a Xeric Grant. He is often invited to lecture and instruct at colleges and institutions such as The University of the Arts and The Barnes Foundation. His work has been featured in national and international press and blogs. His original paper cutouts are often exhibited and are known for their intricacy and craftsmanship. The contrast of the small scale of the paper cutouts with his large-scale murals creates a tension between the private and public aspects of his work and creates powerful images that transform the spaces they inhabit.
