Navigating the Hope and Harm of Gentrification

today March 29, 2023

Background

Many people scoff when they hear the term gentrification, worried that the influx of wealth and the redevelopment of their neighborhoods will ultimately mean their displacement. But there are plenty of other people who hear the term and are heartened by the possibilities of a greater quality of life.

What would it take for gentrification to become a unifying proposition? Is it possible to invest in emerging neighborhoods without displacing longtime neighbors? What are ways we can increase the level of public input on the urban renewal process?

Join WHYY and the Joseph E. Coleman branch of the Free Library of Philadelphia as we explore the hope and harm caused by gentrification and discuss how to balance change and continuity.
