Support provided by the Philadelphia Cultural Fund
In every culture tell stories to remember the past and the traditions and also as a way to talk about the current situation and to think about what the future may bring. Tonya O’Neill and Jackie Jonas are two Philadelphia women who work to continue the African-America storytelling tradition. When our old languages, customs, and culture we suppressed and forbidden by our enslavers, Tonya and Jackie say, storytelling allowed us to pass on our ancestors’ moral guidance, and preserve our cultural values.
